After disrupting the telecom sector with the launch of irresistible 4G offers, the Reliance Jio is all set to make an equal impact in the affordable smartphone handsets space with the announcement of India’s cheapest 4G VoLTE smartphone.
As per news reports, the company is planning to launch the 4G handset early next year, and the smartphone will be in the range of Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,500.
The reports also suggest the low-cost 4G-handset will come equipped with a Spreadtrum 9820 processor, a good quality camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, VoLTE (voice over long-term evolution) and a large display. It should be noted that Reliance already has the LYF range of 4G-enabled smartphones starting from Rs. 2,999.
With the launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm’s lucrative 4G offers, the demand for VoLTE-enabled handsets has increased in the market signifcantly, offering the 4G operators in India – Airtel, Idea, Vodafone, Reliance, Telenor, BSNL – a great opportunity to boost their customer base.
As per a recent study by Counterpoint Research, nearly 70% of the smartphones shipped in India in the third quarter of 2016 were LTE-enabled while 80% of them had VoLTE feature.
With the launch of its 4G offers, the Reliance Jio Infocomm has pitted itself against the existing telecom players including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, and Ideal Celluar. However, as per recent reports, its 4G data speed plummeted by nearly 20% in October, 2016 across 17 circles.
The CLSA report states the Relaicne Jio witnessed a drop in speed from 7.2 mbps in Sep, 2016 to 6 mbps in Oct, 2016 in 17 out of the 22 circules even as its free offers resulted in a boost of subscribers in most markets.
According to a report by CLSA, Reliance Jio saw a 20 per cent fall in speeds from 7.2 mbps in September to 6 mbps in October and with 17 of the 22 markets reporting the fall, a quick subscriber ramp-up led by “free offers” impacted service quality in most markets.
