Starting today, you can withdraw Rs. 2,000 from select petrol pumps through swiping your debit card at the PoS machines(Point of Sale), as the government of India directives. As of today, this facility is available at around 2,500 petrol pumps across the country.
“It has been decided that an amount up to ₹2,000 per day per person in cash can be dispensed against swiping of debit card from select petrol pumps where point of sale (PoS) machines of SBI are already available,” an official told PTI.
PoS machines are essentially used for swiping debit or credit card transactions. However, the government has apparently taken this decision to ease the burden of the banks which have been under tremendous pressure catering to long queues of people.
Petrol pumps run by public sector companies such as India Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum having SBI PoS machines can only dispense cash.
These petrol pumps, however, can dispense Rs. 2,000 per card per day. As per reports, there are 56,190 fuel outlets run by these companies across India.
The government is planning to enable 20,000 more petrol pumps having HDFC, Citbank and ICICI PoS machines for dispensing cash in the next three days.
These petrol pumps can still continue to dispense cash after 24 November – the deadline for accepting old currency notes.
