Supreme Court Refuses to Stay Centre’s Demonetization Drive
A week after banning of high-value currency notes by the BJP-led uninon government, a PIL has been filed by various petitioner challenging the decision to demonitization drive on the grounds of it infriging upon citizen’s right to life and trade among others.
The apex court has sought a comprehensive response from the Center on scrapping of high-denomination currency notes. It has asked the government to file the affidavit with all the measures undertaken to mitigate the inconvenience faced by the citizens since the ban has been in effect.
We are not involving ourselves on the economic issue but we are concerned with the inconvenience caused to people, a bench comprising chief justice T.S. Thakur and justice D.Y. Chandrachud observed.
Discontinuing of higher denomination notes appears to be carpet bombing and not surgical strike, the bench said.
However, the court refused to stay the Center’s notification demonetizing the old high-value currency notes and asked it to consider limits of cash withdrawal.
